Density experiment

Kids from 3rd grade have learnt what "density" is. In Science class, kids helped me to make an experiment to demonstrate that all liquids have different density and we made some hypotesis about what would happen if we put in a same pot water, oil and alcohol.
Some of them said all the 3 liquids would mix together, some of them said just water and alcohol would mix and others said all 3 liquids would stay separated.
So we did the experiment in class, and as water and alcohol are both transparent, we coloured water with colour red and alcohol with colour blue.

For the experiment, we needed:
- 2 plastic glasses
- Bottle of oil
- Bottle of alcohol 96º
- Water
- Blue and red food colouring
- Spoons

First, we coloured the water with red food colouring. Then, we coloured alcohol with blue food colouring. Then, we added in the water glass, the oil and we could see this liquid floats on the water. Later, we added carefully the alcohol in the same glass and we could see this liquid floats on the oil and on the water.
The result, as you can see, was successful! We had in a glass 3 different liquids, separated by colours red, yellow and blue.
So kids learnt that water has more density than oil and alcohol and that makes them float on it.
They enjoyed the lesson a lot!!!
